Summer is Heating Up!

Reveals, Trailers, Gameplay, and More

Greetings!

Huge reveals are going down, straight from the land of Aveum! This week we released new gameplay from one of the more technically challenging levels in Immortals of Aveum™ at Summer Game Fest. Plus tons of creators got a chance to power up sigils in a recent hands-on preview event that’s letting folks at home learn even more about the Immortals. If that’s not enough, we’re also releasing the ultimate guide to combat in IoA with a new gameplay deep dive blog post. Read on, soldier!

Immortals of Aveum is at Summer Game Fest!

A while back, our CTO, Mark Mareata, mentioned this insane game design pitch for IoA:

“Let’s have a 400-foot walking mech level, in the ocean, and we can have the mech come under attack from airships, and you’re fighting inside the mech, and you’re fighting on top of the mech, and maybe you almost fall off the mech at one point?”

Mark Maratea, Chief Technology Officer at Ascendant Studios

Well, that level has DROPPED! If you missed Summer Game Fest Live, the voice actor for Jak and Never Have I Ever star, Darren Barnet, joined Geoff Keighley on stage to chat about the game and introduce that very same 400-foot walking mech in the Colossal Assault Gameplay Trailer. We're ecstatic to show players how they’ll get to fight on, around, and on top of the Colossal, all while Jak’s allies maneuver it’s Godzilla-sized proportions to smash Rasharnian airships right out of the sky!

A brand new gameplay trailer debut not quite enough? Of course not! Watch the exclusive extended cut on IGN’s post-show to see just how jaw-dropping the first sight of the Colossal is for Jak and his fellow Immortals, see more combat arenas, and special clips from a bossfight with big baddie Sandrakk.

All-New Gameplay from the Immortals of Aveum Hands-On Preview Event

We are humbled by all the incredible, astute, and often hilarious IoA content creators and press have shared over the past few days. On May 31st, over 120 content creators, press, and media got to reveal their first impressions on Immortals of Aveum. Just days before, folks flew to EA Redwood Shores in California from all over the world to play IoA for the first time in a hands-on preview event. Many folks also got the chance to interview some of our lead team members working in production, art, UI, combat and more. The response has been awesome, and we’d be lying if we said we weren’t losing sleep watching all of the cool content these creators are posting late into the night. Here are just a few of favorites:

In The Press:

"What Bret Robbins and the team at Ascendant Studios have accomplished thus far with Immortals of Aveum is nothing short of absolutely astounding. I was recently invited out to EA Headquarters in Redwood City, CA, to go hands-on with the game, and what they had to show has me completely blown away."

"There's some stiff competition this year, but if the rest of the game matches the sheer quality, fun, and power fantasy we experienced in our three-hour session, Immortals of Aveum could prove a dark horse contender in GOTY talks too."

“We really wanted to focus on the frenetic gameplay… a lot of times when you implement a wheel you have to think about slowing things down, it creates a tactical moment which is cool but it also very obviously sets a pacing and pulls you out of the game. We made a conscious decision not to do that” said Jim Ingraham, Lead UI Artist at Ascendant Studios."

"My favorite attack of the demo was that ultimate spell: a two-handed purple murder beam that feels just like using my favorite Diablo 3 spell, Disintegrate, in first-person. I was delighted to find that bosses don't have any special immunity to this fire hose of damage, and used it to erase more than half of one mini-boss' health in the first few seconds of our fight."

“Combat is fast and frenetic. It felt akin to DOOM 2016 – or for some older gamers – Hexen. The enemy AI often uses a decent level of strategy. Melee units will charge and try to flank you. Snipers will get to an advantageous position. Dedicated casters try to avoid the line of fire while calling down magic havoc on top of you. You have to be on the move and keep moving, using everything in your kit to survive the encounter… I found it encouraged a more varied style of play that didn’t let me rely on one or two tricks; I was constantly adapting for survival.”

Magic and Spells and Gear - Oh My!

By now, you’ve seen a ton of fast-paced, magic-slinging combat in both ours and content creators’ videos alike, so you know there is a lot going on. You have not only different types of magic at your disposal, such as powerful heavy spells called Furies, Augments that change how you interact with the world, and totems that can manipulate your enemies, you also have epic ways to combine all of these into unique playstyles. Not to mention the ultimate DOMINION SPELL! If all this magic talk has you salivating to develop your strategy and make sure you’re ready to crush some Rasharnians, we’ve created the perfect content for you.

We break down explanations of IoA’s combat, weapons, loot, and more in our Gameplay Deep Dive blog post. Plus we’ll be updating the post as we release more IoA content into the wild, so be sure to check back occasionally!

In addition, check out our 6+ minute Gameplay Deep Dive video, where you’ll learn not only about combat, but also about puzzles, lore, and more alongside video of in-game action. Cause let’s face it, hearing about how a Fury spell can launch enemies is one thing, but seeing them ragdoll into the sky as pillars of earth erupt underneath them is much more satisfying.
